Wildlands Restoration Volunteers: Weeds - Sandstone Ranch Russian Olive

  • What: Remove an invasive species from wetland areas! Volunteers will cut small trees along trees while City staff apply herbicide necessary to prevent regrowth. We will be targeting non-native Russian olives, Siberian elms and black locusts.

    • Russian olives in particular are a state-listed Noxious Weed that negatively impacts the environment by crowding out native trees and shrubs while also impacting recreation along water bodies due to their thick growth and thorns. The City of Longmont has extensively removed most of the mature Russian olives on City property over the past several years and is now working to control Russian olive re-sprouts along streams and other waterbodies utilizing handsaws, loppers, and herbicide.

    • Please note that volunteers running chainsaws will be present on this project.
