What: Join the Endangered Species Coalition for this free, virtual art lesson by artist and community art activist Kenia LaMarr. The workshop, for youth grades 5 and up, and for educators will feature the monarch butterfly.
In this activity, participants will create an image of a monarch butterfly using pointillism—an art technique that involves creating pictures using small dots, lines, or shapes, often with contrasting values to form the illusion of an image. While pointillism is typically associated with painting, we will use black gel pens to achieve a similar effect. This activity connects the technique to a greater cause, as participants will not only explore the artistic process but also advocate for the survival of the monarch butterfly, a species facing threats of extinction.
The process involves layering small marks, with the density of dots or lines helping to create different shades and textures. This allows participants to focus on both their artistic skills and their understanding of environmental issues, encouraging creative expression as well as awareness.
Materials:
Pencil Black Gel point pens
Sketchbook paper,
canvas board,
construction paper, or cardstock
Optional: Watercolor or paint for additional effects (if you would like to incorporate color into your image) This activity is designed to be accessible with easy-to-use materials. While the technique may take time depending on the level of detail chosen, the process is both rewarding and relaxing. Participants can adjust the complexity of their piece to match their skill level and patience.
