Led by Dave Leatherman, a naturalist, educator, and former forest entomologist for the Colorado State Forest Service and a current columnist writing “The Hungry Bird” in the journal “Colorado Birds”, this guided hike will focus on the insects that birds eat. He will specifically address: How does their diet change seasonally? How do they find the insects they eat? How does their anatomy, particularly their beak, inform our knowledge of what they eat? What tricks do insects use to avoid being eaten? Does insect availability play a role in whether a bird migrates or not? This hike is for anyone 5 years old and older who can walk a mile on moderate terrain. While mostly on gravel roads, we might go “off trail” to visit individual trees and other plants. While the cemetery is not flat, our pace will be slow and the altitude gain from its upper reaches to lowest is probably 100 feet. Limit is 15 with families welcomed.
