Harlequin's Gardens: Successful Trough Container Planting, with Mark Emmons

  • What: Learn how to create a container garden using alpine plants that thrive year-round in Colorado’s climate. Mark will demonstrate what soil to use, how to pick the plants for your container, how to plant them, and how to care for these plants for beauty and interest throughout the year. While there is a technical component, there is a lot of creativity in how to arrange the plants. Prior gardening experience is helpful but not required.

    • Mark Emmons has been a professional landscape gardener for more than thirty-five years; practicing the last twelve years in Boulder. One of Mark’s favorite gardens in the States is Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring, New York where he trained in hypertufa trough-making. Since that class, Mark has continued using Stonecrop’s special hypertufa recipe and techniques to make his plant containers. Mark studied horticulture, receiving two certificates, at Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, PA), with postgraduate studies in landscape architecture at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) and earning a certificate of merit in garden design at The English Gardening School (at Chelsea Physic Garden, London). His experience ranges from working in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Scotland, England, Texas, and Colorado. While studying and working in the UK, Mark was exposed to some extraordinary rock and trough alpine gardens.
